Join the Indigenous People's Caucus fundraiser breakfast on Saturday, June 13, 2026, to hear a panel of Alberta Chiefs discuss Treaty Rights and Responsibilities, why separation won't work, and ideas on how to be a good ally.
Chief Sheldon Sunshine of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation (Treaty 8) filed a court injunction challenging the constitutionality of a separatist referendum and how it violates Treaty Rights. Chief Desmond Bull of Louis Bull Tribe (Treaty 6) is one of the Chiefs who met with King Charles III to reaffirm the Treaty relationship between First Nations and the Crown, and will explain the importance of that visit in the face of separatism. Chief Troy Knowlton of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Treaty 7) will discuss recent court rulings. All three Chiefs will also share their ideas on how to be a good ally in today's political climate.
Join us for a lively morning of learning, strategy and pancakes at the Hyatt Regency Calgary Hotel from 8:00 – 9:30. Doors open at 7:30am. Ticket are $40 and can be purchased here. Over the past year, the Alberta government has repeatedly undermined the institutions that uphold our democracy — from invoking the notwithstanding clause, to weakening the authority of the Law Society and Elections Alberta, to retroactively changing petition rules while enabling separatist efforts.
These actions represent a troubling pattern of disregard for the rule of law and the independence of our legal and democratic systems.
The Appeal to Reason Fundraiser is for members of the Alberta legal community and their guests, regardless of political background, who share a commitment to responsible, lawful governance.
There is no cost to attend, but as this is a fundraiser, we ask that guests come prepared to contribute to the Red Deer South NDP Constituency Association.
